Scripture: “Be alert and on your guard; stand firm in your faith (your conviction respecting man’s relationship to God and divine things, keeping the trust and holy fervor born of faith and a part of it). Act like men and be courageous; grow in strength! 14 Let everything you do be done in love (true love to God and man as inspired by God’s love for us).” – 1Corinthians 16:13-14 (AMPC).
Meditate: Most focus only on the “Let everything be done in love” part in verse 14, but miss out the other commands in the verse before: “Be Alert; Be on your Guard; Stand firm in Faith; Be Courageous; Grow in Strength.”
Remember, we are not told just to “do everything in love” but must focus on the other commands such as to stay alert and to hold firmly to our faith and all that we believe and to be courageous and strong spiritually. So why is all this said before we are told to “do everything in love”? Because, only when this is in place can we truly say, we can and are “doing everything in love”. Neglecting all those commands will result in doing things in emotionally and irrationally, which is not the kind of love we are told here to do all things.
Yes, let love and kindness be the motivating factor behind all that you do, but make sure it’s the Agape love (God kind of love) which He has poured into our hearts by His Holy Spirit and not fleshy humanistic love (human-centered philosophy).
We can allow God’s love to prevail in our lives, words, and actions when we first become spiritually discerning, stay alert, stand tall in the faith, be courageous, and strong spiritually, and above all when we are able to listen carefully to what God has to say.
